Comparing Internal Ballistics of Loads using Various PrimersSeveral years earlier, I had conducted an extensive study of primer performance with three different propellants in otherwise normal 30-06 loads. This data, presented in the next three tables, was obtained in January 1996 at Accurate Arms ballistics lab with the help of then chief Accurate Arms ballistician, Bill Falin. We made every possible effort to insure that these results represented only primer-induced differences. For a more complete discussion, refer to 1996 Precision Shooting Annual.
Note for following table comparison of Alcan LR (Large Rifle) and Remington 9½ (Large Rifle) primers: despite generating essentially the same pressure, Alcan manages 29 fps more velocity. Equally, CCI-BR2 (Large Rifle Bench Rest) generates more velocity than CCI-250 (Large Rifle Magnum), despite generating less pressure. Perhaps most surprising is CCI-350 (Large Pistol Magnum), which generates more pressure and velocity than most Large Rifle primers!
