Comparison of Lightweight 5mm Bullets: Let-to-right:
30-grain LTB, 32-grain Hornady V-Max, and 32-grain Sierra BlitzKing.
The latter has a significant BC advantage but it will not shoot well
in the tested 1/12 twist barrel when launched at >4400 fps. Conversely,
when launched from the 1/16 twist Pac-Nor barrel, accuracy was impressive
even at >4650 fps muzzle velocity.
A Dreary Day at the Cortez Rifle and
Pistol Club Range: On this day we were testing 32-grain and 39-grain
Sierra BK bullets in the 5/35 SMc fitted with a 1/12-twist barrel.
Conditions were cold but the slight breeze, while making the low 40s
F temperature a bit uncomfortable, was insufficient to cause any real
difficulty with making groups. Nevertheless, while the 39-grain bullet
showed fine accuracy, of ten loads tested with the 32-grain bullet
(two propellants with five seating depths each), only one showed any
hope – most produced patterns exceeding one inch.
