Stocks and barreled actions used in this study. Note that additional stock modifications were required for the truncated plastic stock – turns out this was a long-action stock (I have no idea where it came from!) so I had to further shorten the front. Also note that we tried to use the unaltered factory stocks (along with a conventional varminting scope – Leupold VX-III) to compare heating and cooling rates but equipment limitations rendered this impossible (another test for another day). After firing each test string, we switched the barreled action to the next-in-line barreled action; stock and remainder of the set-up was otherwise identical.

Our basic setup at the bench. Note that we painted the barrel flat black – this improves temperature reading precision with the infrared temperature-sensing gun used for this study. Also note attachment at butt of gun; this is a five-pound bag of shot, which proved necessary in order to balance gun on the bags with this unusual setup. Clipboard holds the data entry sheets used for each test.
